SEAT Exeo Prices Confirmed - Prices Revealed

SEAT has announced pricing and specification details for its new Exeo saloon.
Available in April, the car will cost from £17,740 - and will be offered in S, SE, Sport and range-topping SE Lux trim levels.

Drivers will be offered a choice of three engines, all of which will meet Euro V emissions standards.

Most popular will be the common rail turbodiesels producing 141 or 168 bhp, while flagship models will get a potent 198bhp turbocharged petrol. All three cars get a six-speed manual gearbox.

At launch, the new SEAT saloon’s 0 to 62 mph times range from 9.2 seconds (for the 141bhp TDI) through 8.4 seconds (168bhp TDI) to a spirited 7.3 seconds for the 198bhp petrol turbo. Maximum speeds are 133 mph, 142 mph and 149 mph respectively.

Meanwhile, the Exeo is capable of up to 51.4 mpg (on the combined cycle) with an official CO2 emissions figure of as little as 143 g/km.

Among the equipment highlights are USB connectivity (allowing iPOD style music players to be used in-car); cruise control; steering wheel-mounted audio controls; dual zone climate control and stylish alloy wheels.

Drivers Face Negative Equity - Investigation

NOSE-diving car prices mean thousands of UK motorists are being plunged into negative equity on their vehicle loans, Auto Express has discovered.

And the shortfall adds up to a huge £272million!

The problem affects buyers who opted for PCP finance – which totalled £2.13billion in 2006. These deals typically involve making a series of monthly instalments, then one final balloon payment after two years, to secure ownership of the car.

This is known as the Minimum Guaranteed Future Value (MGFV) – which is
predicted in advance, and based on what the vehicle will be worth at the end of the deal.

But the slump in the market means these estimates are now way off the mark – as our table (below) reveals.

As a result, motorists who took out PCP finance deals two years ago are left with final payments which are much bigger than their vehicle’s actual value.

The Finance and Leasing Association described PCP as “a lottery”, and admitted most buyers were now forced to simply hand back their keys.

AA president Edmund King said: “This is shocking news. Many people will suffer.”
He added that the negative equity would have a knock-on effect for new buyers. “Those who’ve had their fingers burned won’t have any incentive to buy another for a new car,” he said.

Energy Prices Set To Soar Again... - Fuel Prices

PETROL prices may be about to get pumped back up. After a slump in oil prices gave drivers a break from rocketing fuel bills, the OPEC cartel of oil-producing nations agreed a huge production cut to try to force crude values back up.

Output was slashed by 2.2 million barrels per day in a bid to push prices up from the current per barrel to around . When petrol reached an average level of 119.5p per litre in July, that figure was 7. But some analysts say plummeting demand brought about by the global economic crisis will prevent a price hike.

October saw Singapore host Formula One’s first night race.

It was a thrilling spectacle as the world’s greatest drivers battled it out under 10,000 street lights. While the result did little to establish who would be the 2008 F1 champion, our road test team had already decided on Auto Express’s Performance Car of the Year – the mind-blowing Nissan GT-R. Watch videos of all the cars here.

As in previous years, we took 20 of the most entertaining and desirable cars on the market to the Anglesey racing circuit in Wales, where we did some serious testing. For 2008, our shortlist was more spectacular than ever, featuring cars worthy of filling any petrolhead’s dream garage, such as KTM’s radical new X-Bow and Lamborghini’s scintillating Gallardo LP560-4.

At the other end of the price scale – but with an equal chance of victory – we had the MINI Cooper JCW and Abarth Grande Punto. Despite strong challenges, the GT-R led the field, which is good news for those collecting the keys to one in March.

Japanese supercar blasts in (Issue 1,035)
The Nissan GT-R is taking an agonisingly long time to hit UK shores – customer models don’t arrive here until spring. All the same, it has already made quite an impact on the performance car hierarchy. We were blown away by our first test of the super-coup in June when it beat the Porsche 911 and Audi R8. And when it lined up against 19 other hot-shoes at the Anglesey racing circuit in Wales, it scored an even more impressive victory.

Prices drop from record highs (Issue 1,035)
Amid the doom and gloom of the economy came some good news for Britain’s financially battered motorists. Due to plummeting global oil prices, and after peaking at an average £1.20 per litre in June, many forecourts were charging 99.9p for unleaded. Supermarket chain Asda was the first to dip below the £1 a litre mark (below), and rivals soon followed. At the time, we reported that a Volkswagen Golf driver would save around £10 a fill-up, or nearly £250 over 10,000 miles.

Italians feel the pinch (Issue 1,033)
Supercar fans were in for a shock when Lamborghini revealed its four-door Estoque saloon concept at the Paris Motor Show, as the production version would have a diesel option. True followers of the famous brand, however, regarded it as old news. After all, long before his firm made supercars, Ferruccio Lamborghini was Italy’s leading tractor manufacturer.

Compact hatch’s debut (Issue 1,033)
ALSO at the French expo, Audi unveiled its new premium supermini. Wisely having dropped ‘Metro’ from its badge, the A1 Sportback show car looked nearly production ready with a traditional five-door bodyshell. Our story revealed the firm was planning a 2010 launch, and bosses were gunning for the likes of the MINI and Alfa’s MiTo.

Grand plan for SSC (Issue 1,036)
The British obsession with the World Land Speed Record continued with news of a fresh attempt. Project Bloodhound SSC – led by Richard Noble and Andy Green, who helped crack the sound barrier 12 years ago – would use rocket, jet and piston power to sail through the current 763mph record.

Supercar prototype caught on test (Issue 1,035)
The Mac is back. Or at least it will be when McLaren unleashes its successor to the mighty F1 in 2010. In October, our spies spotted a prototype undergoing road tests, and the resulting pictures we developed showed the newcomer is likely to be every bit as spectacular as its predecessor. We reported that the car is being worked on solely by McLaren, following the end of the deal with Mercedes that spawned the SLR.

Leading the charge (Issue 1,035)
BMW created a spark of interest in its alternative fuel projects this month when it officially unveiled its MINI E project. We revealed the newcomer – which went on to make its public debut at the Los Angeles Motor Show in the US the following month – would be fitted with a powerful electric motor capable of producing 204bhp. However, Britons hoping to get their hands on an electrically powered MINI were disappointed when BMW announced it would trial only 50 of the vehicles – and all of them would go to customers in the US.

Road police cutbacks (Issue 1,036)
An investigation by Auto Express revealed some UK police forces were planning to cut the number of traffic cops by up to 84 per cent. The shock statistic was contained in a survey carried out by the Department for Transport. The report also revealed that Britain today has nearly 20 per cent fewer road police than a decade ago, despite the rising number of vehicles on the road. Commenting on these findings, Edmund King of the AA told us: “We must reverse this trend in order to make our roads safer.”

Firm folds as belts tighten (Issue 1,035)
ONE of the UK’s leading prestige car rental firms – the Segrave Club – proved City money was drying up rather quickly. The outfit, based in Knightsbridge, London, specialised in supercars and went into administration, blaming a sudden fall in demand from its wealthiest customers. A spokesman said: “Our target market is City bankers, and our funding is based there too. Both sources have dried up in recent weeks.”

Hot hatch fans rejoice – the Golf GTI is getting a little brother!
VW has an all-new Polo on the way in 2009, and is readying the wildest, fastest and sportiest version ever to top the range.

Following in the footsteps of the MkV Golf GTI – which showed VW could still produce amazing performance cars when it launched in 2004 – the Polo GTI looks set to be a sales smash hit.

As you can see, the flagship won’t be short of visual aggression. All the classic GTI design cues are there, from the piano black grille highlighted in red to the GTI badging and deep air intakes.

Neat touches include muscular flared arches, filled by gorgeous alloys. The look is finished off by a subtle roof spoiler and bodykit – and the result is by far the most
distinctive Polo ever made.

Inside, the cabin will see some dramatic leaps in quality, with similar soft-touch plastics to those in the latest MkVI Golf (tested on Page 40). But what will really make the newcomer stand out will be its detailing – which includes figure-hugging sports seats, red piping and racy aluminium pedals.

The next Polo will be similar in size to the outgoing machine. But as it shares the PQ25 small car platform that underpins the latest SEAT Ibiza, more space has been freed up inside. Using this chassis as a base, company engineers will also add stiffer springs and thicker anti-roll bars, plus sophisticated traction and stability control systems.

When it was launched, the MkV Golf GTI set the standard for modern performance VWs, and the Polo GTI aims to have a similar impact. It will combine accurate steering and limited body roll with a compliant ride. Completing the package is a set of upgraded brakes.

However, the Polo’s hottest asset will be its engine: a 1.4-litre supercharged and
turbocharged four-cylinder TSI, which will grace the Ibiza Cupra early in 2009.
This produces 178bhp and 250Nm of torque in the GTI, and gives a 0-60mph time of around seven seconds and a 140mph top speed.

What will make the car fun to drive will be the way its power is delivered. The combination of turbo and supercharging means there will be a broad spread of torque at low revs, with muscular urge continuing all the way to the red line. The engine’s small capacity will also translate into strong economy and CO2 emissions. Figures of 40mpg and less than 150g/km are expected.
As with the Cupra, the GTI gets a six-speed manual box as standard, with a fast-shifting seven-ratio DSG box an option.

While the new Polo is set to make its world debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September, the GTI won’t be seen until early 2010. A price of around £15,500 is likely.

These spy shots show the aftermath of a controlled side impact test of the forthcoming supermini-MPV. And the little people carrier’s star feature – its rear-hinged back doors – have stood up well to the impact!

Set to debut at September’s Frankfurt Motor Show, the new Meriva will shake up the class with a stylish shape which has changed little from the 2008 Geneva Motor Show concept.
The doors are similar to those on the Rolls-Royce Phantom and Mazda RX-8, and are hinged at the rear to allow superb access to the back seats.

In addition, the Meriva will boast a flexible interior with a sliding rear bench seat. And it’s also set to continue the big leaps in cabin quality Vauxhall made with the Insignia. Add in a sleek shape that’s inspired by the Flextreme show car – seen at Frankfurt in 2007 – and it’s sure to turn heads.

The big cat is finally out of the bag! Jaguar has released the first pictures and full details of its new XF Diesel S, an oilburning flagship that combines class-leading performance with impressive fuel economy.

Due on sale in March, the newcomer is fitted with a new 3.0-litre V6 engine with 273bhp and a staggering 600nm of torque. Capable of a top speed of 155mph, and a 0-60mph sprint of 5.9 seconds the newcomer also promises to return 42mpg.
Meanwhile, CO2 emissions are 179g/km – that’s 10 percent less than the acclaimed 2.7-litre unit that this new engine replaces.

Power is transmitted to the road via the rear wheels, through an updated six speed automatic gearbox. Drivers can either select a fully automatic mode, or swap ratios via steering wheel mounted paddles.
To complete the package, XF Diesel S also gets 20 inch wheels, an aerodynamic boot lid spoiler and discreet ‘S’ badging.
Inside, the S gets sports seats, and a number of specification upgrades to the car’s satellite navigation and air-conditioning systems.

However, the new Diesel S is not the only XF to benefit from the company’s latest diesel technology.

Jaguar has announced that is also plans to add an entry level 3.0-litre V6 model to the line-up to replace the basic 2.7-litre V6.

Honda Insight breaks cover

Honda has released the first picture of the production version of the new Insight hybrid, which is billed as the most affordable car of its type.
It’s certainly a world away from the original Insight coup. That model, launched in 1999, used aluminium and plastic to achieve a kerbweight of less than a tonne, and returned economy of around 80mpg. Becasue of the car's specialist design, only 18,000 were sold.
The new version is a different proposition. When it first broke cover a few months ago at the Paris Motor Show, its combination of packaging and practicality wowed the crowds.
The battery pack needed for the electric power is stored under the boot floor and a set of small yet-powerful motors not only reduces costs, but also maximises cabin space.
Honda is aiming to sell 200,000 Insights a year globally. It will be the first of a new family of hybrids from the firm: next in line is the CR-Z sports car, followed by the Jazz supermini.Prices for the Insight will be announced in the new year, with sales starting in the spring.

Aston Vantage Sportpack

Think the 380bhp 4.3-litre Aston Martin V8 Vantage is not powerful enough? The firm is now offering a 20bhp upgrade for owners of the recently replaced coupe. The retrospectively fitted kit features a revised induction system that boosts bhp up to 400, while torque is increased by 10NM to 420. What’s more, those drivers can also specify the Sports Pack handling upgrade as seen on the new 4.7 V8 Vantage. Both upgrades are available from franchised dealers costing £1,500 and £3,300 plus fitting, respectively.

Nissan GT-R Revealed - Full UK Spec

Nissan has revealed official details of its European-specification GT-R models – and it's good news for UK customers. The supercar, which arrives here next April, has benefitted from a host of improvements over US and Japanese editions.

Thanks to some electronic upgrades, the GT-R’s 3.8-litre V6 twin-turbo engine gets a 5bhp boost taking peak power to 478bhp while torque stays at 588Nm. Dunlop SP Sport 600 DSST tyres will be fitted as standard – these are the same tyres that were used by Nissan engineers during the GT-R's record-breaking lap of the Nurburgring, resulting in a time of 7 minutes 29 seconds.

Other changes include modified suspension spring rate settings, which Nissan says result in an improved ride. Another tweak is the introduction of the Gun Metal grey coloured Rays seven-spoke alloy wheels for the standard and Premium Edition GT-Rs.

There will be a Black Edition too which will be fitted with the same wheels but, unsurprisingly, in black. Lucky customers can also choose a new pearl white exterior colour called ‘Storm’.

As for the price, the GT-R will start from £56,795 on the road with an increase of £1,300 for the Premium Edition (£58,095) and another £1,300 for the Black Edition (£59,395). So far, 1200 GT-Rs have been ordered by UK customers and with demand still very strong, Nissan says that any new customer ordering now should expect delivery in mid 2010.

Big Three Sale

Roll up, roll up! America’s ‘big three’ – GM, Ford and Chrysler – are selling assets to try to avoid bankruptcy. The firms’ bosses went to the US Government in search of $22.9billion in loans.

Ford’s Alan Mulally, GM’s Rick Wagoner and Chrysler’s Bob Nardelli have agreed to sell private jets and work for $1 a year to persuade senators to bail them out! GM is believed to be selling its HQ in Detroit, plus vacant manufacturing buildings in Europe, to raise $4bn. It may also offload Saab, Suzuki, Pontiac and Saturn.

Experts suggest that, without help, GM will be insolvent by Christmas. Meanwhile, Ford plans to sell Volvo, and has already dropped its $360million stake in Mazda. The blue oval still needs a $9bn loan to be profitable by 2010. And Chrysler owner Cerebrus wants $7.2bn from previous parent Daimler to compensate for mismanagement at the brand when it took over.

Slump halts car plants

Car plants are grinding to a halt in the wake of falling sales. The gates to 68 factories worldwide will close as demand slumps.

In the UK alone, Honda will shut its Swindon site for two months after Christmas. Nissan has cut the working week at its Sunderland factory to three days, while Ford and MINI plants in Southampton and Oxford will close for the next month.

Land Rover’s Solihull facility, Bentley’s site in Crewe and Vauxhall’s bases are extending festive shutdowns by two weeks, too. Ford, Chrysler and GM are closing 35 US plants for limited periods, while PSA and Renault are shutting sites in France and Spain for two weeks. Plus, seven Fiat factories in Italy will have an extended Christmas closure.

Honda quits F1

It’s the end of the road for Honda in F1. In a shock announcement, the Japanese giant has confirmed it is withdrawing from grand prix racing with immediate effect.

In a statement, Honda’s President Takeo Fukai outlined the company’s reasons for making the radical cut. “This difficult decision has been made in light of the quickly deteriorating operating environment facing the global auto industry”, he said. “Honda must protect its core business activities and secure its long term future.”

The decision leaves Britain’s Jenson Button and his team mate Rubens Barrichello - together the 700 staff at the squad’s factory in Brackley, Northants - facing an uncertain future. However, there is a glimmer of hope, as team bosses Nick Fry and Ross Brawn have confirmed they are aiming to find a buyer for the outfit.

In an interview with the BBC, Fry remained upbeat. “We have only had a short amount of time, but in the last 12 hours we've had three serious people come to us suggesting they would like to buy the team, so we are still hoping to be in Melbourne, Australia for the opening round of the 2009 season.”

Fresh Mustang on the charge

Times are tough in the US car industry – but if there’s one legend that can help consumer confidence, it’s Ford’s Mustang.

Taking a bow at last week’s LA Motor Show was an all-new version, and every element – but for the fastback shape – is fresh.

It gets retuned suspension, more power, larger wheels and an even throatier 4.6-litre V8.

A single unit now houses the headlamps and indicators. The bumper and grille are reworked, while a ‘powerdome’ bonnet adds muscle. The revised rear features triple-LED tail-lamps, which fire in sequence from the inside to act as a turn indicator.

“This car marks 45 years of passion and enthusiasm from the best designers, engineers and manufacturing experts. We can’t wait for people to drive it,” said chief engineer Paul Randle.

Stability control is now standard, as are twin front and side airbags. New dials and better sound insulation are also included, and there are up to 125 ambient lighting options. At launch next year, buyers will get a choice of V6 or V8 power in coup, convertible or glass roof bodies – although the new car won’t officially be sold in the UK.

Mazda 3 hatchback breaks cover

These are the first official pictures of the all-new Mazda3 five-door hatch! A four-door saloon version was unveiled at last week’s LA motor show, but Mazda has chosen next week’s Bologna expo to reveal the more European-orientated version of the 3.

Sharing its underpinnings with the Ford Focus hatch, it promises to be just a sharp to drive as it looks. In fact we’ve already been behind the wheel of a heavily disguised prototype – read about our first impressions here.

Under the bonnet the Mazda will feature the same 2.2-litre diesel that recently debuted on the Mazda 6 – available in a range of tunes up to 180bhp – as well as a range of direct-injection petrol units.

Using a trio of functions, the new system aims to improve its users driving style, resulting in lower emissions and increased efficiency.

The three new technologies are headed by an ECON Mode which controls engine transmission for more fuel-efficient driving.

There’s a more advanced version of the guidance system currently available in the new Civic, which illuminates the speedometer in colours ranging from green to blue depending on how efficiently you are using the gas pedal.

And to provide an overall summary of the trip, there’s a scoring function which displays up to ten leaves depending on how efficiently you have driven. Honda's aim is to make "the hybrid experience more fun and rewarding". There is also a bar which displays your lifetime score.

The new ECO system is due to debut in Honda’s Insight hybrid, out next spring.

WILL THE FED PUT A STOP TO THE DOLLAR RALLY?

Contrary to the some people's belief, the US equities did not crash today. When S&P futures hit its limit down levels before the US markets opened and Dow futures dropped 5 percent, some media outlets were touting the possibility of circuit breakers kicking in; that would have meant an 1100 point decline in the Dow. Thankfully, it did not happen and even though the Dow fell 312 points today, it is off its lows.

The type of moves that we have seen in the currency market today is typically what we see in a quarter or a half year. USD/JPY is down more than 3 percent, the NZD/USD is down 6.25 percent while the AUD/USD has declined 7.75 percent. The sell-off in the Japanese Yen crosses is even more severe with AUD/JPY falling more than 10 percent. On Thursday, we said that even though it may be very tempting to call a top in the dollar, especially against the Euro, in order for this EUR/USD rally to be real and for investors to be convinced to stop selling higher yielding currencies, we need to see stabilization in the financial markets and a return of confidence.

Equities are driving currencies as everyone sells first and ask questions later. The trigger for the collapse today was concerns about corporate profitability. Sony issued a profit warning, Samsung reported a 44 percent decline in Q3 profits while Volvo reported a 37 percent decline. Investors are finally seeing how big of a toll the global slowdown is having on exports. With risk of a further decline in export demand, central banks around the world will have to act aggressively to prevent the global recession from turning into a global depression.

Fed Fund Futures are Pricing in the Possibility of a 75bp Rate Cut

The anticipated event risk next week is the Federal Reserve's interest rate decision. Going into the meeting, the market is now pricing in an 68 percent chance of a 50bp rate cut and an 32 percent chance of a 75bp rate cut. This indicates that the market believes 25bp will be the minimum that the Fed eases on Wednesday. We believe that a 75bp rate cut will be a too aggressive because it leaves the central bank with next to no room to cut interest rates in case things get worse – and they will. The 3 most realistic options are a 50bp rate cut, a 50bp coordinated easing along with other central banks and a 25bp rate cut. A coordinated easing will probably have the most significant impact on the financial markets and given the drop in oil prices and the deterioration in European economic data, the ECB and the BoE may not be opposed to this option. Although the Fed may have considered a 25bp rate cut earlier this week, they know that if they under deliver now, the consequences for the equity market could be severe. A larger interest rate cut could put a stop to the dollar's rally.

Where are the Value Points for the Currency Market?

In the Wed edition of the Daily Currency Focus we talked about how the dollar could rise another 5%. At that time, the EUR/USD was trading at 1.2829 and the GBP/USD at 1.6236. The GBP/USD has already hit the 5 percent target and at one point this morning it even became undervalued on a purchasing parity basis. Although the UK GDP report confirms that the country is headed for a recession and validates the weakness, we have seen a near term low in the currency pair. As for the EUR/USD on the other hand it has only dropped 2.9 percent. The EUR/USD does not become a value play until 1.15-1.20.

Consumer Confidence, GDP, Chicago PMI and New Measures by the Treasury

In addition to the FOMC interest rate decision, there are a handful of other US economic data worth watching in the coming week. This includes new home sales, consumer confidence, durable goods, third quarter GDP, personal income, personal spending and Chicago PMI. Also keep an eye out for any new announcements from the US Treasury in an effort to bolster investor confidence. Existing home sales increased 5.5 percent last month which was stronger than the market expected, but the median price of a house sold fell sharply.

HOW MUCH HAVE FX RANGES EXPANDED IN 2007?

We all know that the daily trading range of currencies have expanded, but by how much? Compared to 2007, the daily average trading range for the EUR/USD year to date has increased 195%. The average range for GBP/USD has increased 150% while the range for USD/JPY has expanded by 140%. Since the beginning of October, the ranges have exploded even further. The average trading range for the EUR/USD is now 300% greater than the range in 2007. Here is a table with a quick study that we ran on trading ranges:

EURO TESTS 1.25, EMERGING MARKETS TO SUFFER FROM DOLLAR STRENGTH

Any positive sentiment expressed in Thursday's trading has been all but extinguished as the Euro drops 335 pips - the currency even temporarily traded below 1.25 against the US dollar. The Eurozone had a wealth of numbers released today, including German Import prices, French and German PMI, and Italian Business and Consumer Confidence. Unsurprisingly, PMI reports show that the Manufacturing sector has weakened substantially. Italian business confidence was weak while surprisingly consumer confidence was strong. In addition, German Import prices fell to -1.0%. Next Monday, the Euro-zone will face the German IFO index and there is a decent chance that sentiment has weakened substantially as uncertainty and fear has taken its toll on the global economy. The latest round of dollar strength continues to push emerging market currencies lower. It has forced these countries to raise interest rates (Denmark hiked by 50bp), take loans from the IMF and to obtain swap lines with the ECB. Crippled by a weak currency and the risk of runs on their currency, emerging Europe will no longer be the engine of growth that everyone may have hoped for.

YEN HITS 1995 HIGH, WILL THE BANK OF JAPAN INTERVENE?

The Japanese yen strengthen across the board, reaching some unheard of gains against the dollar and carry trades. Today's USD/JPY trading is one for the history books, with the pair falling more than 700 pips intraday. Even though the currency pair ended down only 370 pips, volatility like this is worth mentioning. The sell-off was triggered by the extreme losses in global equity markets, with the Nikkei falling almost 10 percent. Any hopes of stabilizing volatility seem to be tossed out the window as investors become more fearful than ever. The VIX hit a new historical high today, reflecting the continued aim of risk aversion. These magnificent price movements in JPY are not the result of any strengthening fundamentals in the part of the Japanese economy. If you are wondering about Bank of Japan intervention, don't expect it to happen. As an export dependent nation, a strong currency is not in Japan's best interest. However unlike in the past where the BoJ has intervened when USD/JPY fell below 105 and 100, we may not see any action by the Japanese government this time around. The Prime Minister has already said that the rise in the yen is not always bad because it pushes down oil prices for Japan. If he is considering intervention, he would not mention this. Since the problems are inherent in the US and the Eurozone, intervening at this time would be counterproductive for Japan. The Japanese government will want to stand aside and allow the US and Eurozone governments to take their own measures to spur growth and not strengthen the dollar for short term relief.

GBP/USD SEES SHARP REVERSAL AFTER HAVING BEEN DOWN 1000 PIPS

Even though the British pound has ended the US trading session down 375 pips or 2.25 percent, it has had an impressive recovery. A few hours before the US market opened, the GBP/USD fell more than 1000 pips to a low of 1.5267. At that time, the GBP/USD went from overvalued on a purchasing power parity basis to undervalued. Third quarter growth contracted 0.5 percent, which was more than the market expected. This decline confirmed the central bank's warning that the country is in a recession. Candor has not been rewarded in the financial markets as King's comments sent the British pound tumbling close to 13 percent against the US dollar this week. There are no significant UK economic releases on the calendar in the coming week. We believe that after the sharp sell-off, the GBP/USD is now due for a recovery. It is Daylight Savings in Europe this weekend, so the difference between Eastern Time and GMT becomes +5.

COMMODITY CURRENCIES RAVAGED BY RISK AVERSION

Despite OPEC 1.5 million barrel production cut, oil prices have tumbled, taking the Canadian dollar down with it. Risk aversion is to blame as the dollar's strength drives higher yielding currencies and oil prices lower. Canadian consumer prices were stronger than expected, just like the price component of the IVEY PMI report had predicted. The Australian dollar was the worst hit of the 3 commodity currencies with the currency falling 7.7 percent against the US dollar and 11 percent against the Japanese Yen. The New Zealand dollar dropped close to 7 percent as well. In the coming week, there are not many releases expected from Australia or New Zealand. Canada only has the August GDP report due for release. Therefore the fate of the comm. Dollars will continue to be tied to the market's risk appetite.

EUR/USD: Currency in Play on Monday

EUR/USD will be the currency in play on Monday with Eurozone and US economic data due for release. We expect German IFO Business Climate Index at 5:00 am ET and US New Home Sales at 10:00 am ET.

Trading today has seen EUR/USD falling more than 300 points, reaffirming its position in the Bollinger Band sell zone. In order to identify support, we are using Fibonacci retracements drawn from the lows of November 2005 to the highs of April 2008. Despite the large slide in prices, action did respect the support 78.6% retracement. Resistance will be the high of yesterday's rally located at 1.3000. Lying above this level price action will face significant hurdles as there is the one-standard deviation Bollinger band, the 10-period SMA, as well as the 61.8% retracement lying at 1.3305. Therefore we will define resistance as a range between 1.3000 and 1.3305. To make any convincing attempt at a rebound, EUR/USD must develop the momentum to break these levels.

50mpg in fastest-ever MINI!

It’s one of Britain’s hottest hatches, and a fierce contender for Auto Express’s Performance Car of the Year award, as our line-up in the special supplement in the centre pages reveals.

That’s not the only trick up the John Cooper Works MINI’s sleeve, though. Despite packing enough punch to cover 0-60mph in only 6.5 seconds, the supermini can now add wallet-friendly 50mpg-plus fuel economy to its impressive list of credentials. That’s 25 per cent more than the maker’s claimed 40.9mpg combined figure. But only if you know how to handle this hot hatch...

To prove the point, Auto Express entered the turbo pocket rocket in the annual MPG Marathon run by fleet specialist ALD Automotive. The aim of the two-day event, which is now in its sixth year, is simple: get the best fuel economy you can over a set road route. Every car has a crew of two, and there are prizes in several categories.

Thirty cars and nine vans were under starters orders in Bristol. Getting the most from a tank of fuel is one of 2008’s hot topics, so the entry list was the biggest ever, with everything from the latest city cars and superminis to fleet favourites, family saloons and SUVs. There was even a Subaru Impreza WRX and a Chevy Corvette!

We were keeping our eye on James Sutherland, boss of fleet driver training firm Peak Performance. He’d won for the last two years, and was confident of making it a hat-trick. Having achieved a staggering 78.3mpg from a Toyota Aygo in 2007, Sutherland and co-driver Richard Hill reckoned they could crack 80mpg this time. “I’ve had a full English breakfast this morning, so that’s going to add some weight!” joked Hill. We had similar concerns about staff photographer Pete Gibson’s camera gear, as we’d had to fold the MINI’s rear seats flat to get it all in.

Organiser Ross Durkin explained the point of the MPG Marathon. “We’re here to show how simple techniques can improve any car’s economy,” he said. “Pump prices have risen every year we’ve run this, so 10-15 per cent more miles per tank is worthwhile. ”

Every car was filled with fuel and had its tyres set to the recommended pressures. After a safety briefing it was time to hit the road – all 411 miles of it!

Day one’s 187-mile route took us west from Bristol over the Severn Bridge and into Wales. After passing through Monmouth and crossing back into England, we travelled north through Hereford, Stoke and Buxton, before finishing near Macclesfield in Cheshire. We focused on moving up through the gears fast, keeping the revs to 2,000rpm or less and freewheeling down any slopes.

Boost

On the JCW, there’s no Minimalism package of eco technologies that helps boost economy on other MINIs. Brake Energy Regeneration, Auto Start-Stop or Switch Point Display aren’t fitted, so it was all down to us and our right foot.

One trick was to get into top gear early. This car pulls well, so we shifted through first, second and third, then moved up to sixth at only 1,000rpm.

But an economy run calls for luck, too. We gave a whoop of delight as we approached a clear roundabout, and were able to cruise over it without slowing. Yet later we turned the air blue as we were forced to brake hard when a tractor appeared at a T-junction we were about to sail left around. Minutes later it was all smiles as we happily crawled up a hill behind it – using very little fuel – then coasted past using none at all as we went down the other side.

It became clear we could easily beat the 40.9mpg official figure. The trip computer peaked at 54.7mpg, although our final read-out showed 53.3mpg. We were happy with that – but our driving style just hadn’t been realistic. Nobody, not least someone who’s spent £20,995 on a JCW, will d0 40mph on an A-road. And that’s what you have to do to top 50mpg in a hot hatch like this.

Plus, although stickers on the back of the car warned other road users why we were going slowly, people weren’t very understanding. We were flashed, hooted and gestured at by numerous annoyed drivers. “Just tough it out!” had been Sutherland’s advice.

But we decided not to. For day two’s return to Bristol, we injected a dose of reality. Sacrificing our chances of winning a prize, we drove as close to the speed limit as was safe on every road bar motorways, where we stuck to 60mph. We knew it would affect our mpg; the question was, how much?

Not as much as you’d imagine. Even after a 30-mile run on the M6, the trip computer said 50.9mpg, and as we neared Bristol on the M4 we were still over the magic 50mpg mark. But the last eight miles of rush-hour traffic to the finish was always going to be a problem.

Despite our best efforts to nurse the JCW home, we couldn’t keep it up – our final average was 49.4mpg. Still, MINI was impressed with our 50.2mpg return over the two days. Its spokesman said: “You’ve proved this model is the UK’s greenest hot hatch. We believe this makes the JCW ideal for drivers who want to downsize, reduce fuel costs and environmental impact, but still own a sporting car."

Tech behind our mpg bid

Eking those extra miles out of our MINI JCW’s tank was a piece of cake. We simply had to drive like saints. For the first leg of the journey, we limited our speed to 40mph. We also shifted through the gears as fast as possible, keeping revs down to 2,000rpm or less, and freewheeled down anything that looked like a slope.

In addition, professional gauges (above, left) were used to check tyre pressures – a 10psi drop is said to hike consumption by 2.5 per cent. Plus, we ensured the air-con was off, to boost returns.

New Murciélago spied

Feast your eyes on Lamborghini’s ultimate supercar. Spied here testing at the famous Nurburgring circuit, this is a prototype for the next Murcielago – and with a new 700bhp 6.0-litre V12 engine, it promises to be the fastest raging bull in history.

As you can see from this test car's wider bodywork, the new Murcielago will have a broader track, increasing grip and handling. It is also believed the new ultra-car will replace the current Murcielago's steel set-up with a lighter carbon-fibre body.

Thanks to direct injection and other engine modifications, the 6.0-litre V12 will produce around 700bhp and together with the lighter weight, it should do 0-60mph in around three seconds and have a top speed well in excess of 210mph.

Expect the new model, which could even carry the legendary Jota badge, to arrive in 2010.

Volkswagen Golf MkVI Bluemotion

Here’s a new Golf with every reason to be blue!

Volkswagen has today unveiled the Golf BlueMotion concept, which emits only 99g/km of CO2 – meaning buyers won’t have to pay a penny in annual road tax!

Under the current road excise duty system, the Golf BlueMotion falls just 1g/km shy of the 100g/km limit for band A – but that will still save owners the £35 per year demanded for cars in higher band B.

The hatchback emits exactly the same amount of CO2 as the smaller Polo BlueMotion and beats the current MkV Golf Bluemotion’s emission count by 20g/km, as well as undercutting the Ford Focus ECOnetic, its key rival, by 16g/km.

The newcomer also boasts fuel economy of 74.3mpg combined – compared to the equivalent Golf V’s 62.8mpg figure – thanks to an ultra efficient 1.6-litre TDI engine that develops 104bhp and 249Nm of torque, allowing the green machine to despatch the 0-62mph sprint in 11.2 seconds.

Officially a concept at present, the Golf Bluemotion achieves its miserly fuel consumption and emissions figures by way of improved aerodynamics, a five-speed gearbox with revised ratios, and alloys shod in low rolling resistance rubber. A diesel particulate filter is also fitted to reduce nitrous oxide emissions.

After months of spy shots and more recently an official teaser photo, could this image finally reveal the Porsche Panamera?

There’s no doubt the four-door shape is close to the real thing. The sleek nose, with its swept-back lights, resembles the 911’s, while the truncated rear sits low and squat.

The biggest question mark is over the detailing in the image. It doesn’t seem to feature the LED running lights from Porsche’s teaser shot, but adds an indicator repeater ahead of the front wheelarch not seen in the official image. The four-seat, front-engined Panamera sits on the same platform as the Cayenne and will share a version of the SUV’s 4.5-litre V8 powerplant.

Future engine developments will include a hybrid with an electric motor to boost power, plus a version of VW’s 3.6-litre V6. There are also suggestions that a V6 TDI diesel might arrive beyond 2010.

The Panamera’s price tag means it rivals high-end versions of the Mercedes S-Class and BMW 7-Series. It will also take aim at four-door supercars such as the Maserati Quattroporte, Lamborghini Estoque and Aston Martin Rapide.

Z’s small screen debut

The game is up for the 370Z! This screen grab reveals Nissan is repeating its trick with the GT-R and giving the coup its world debut in a video game.

The 350Z replacement, due in 2010, has been spotted in trailers for the latest Need for Speed title from Electronic Arts – and is only partially obscured by gangsters. We recognise the dramatic sloping roof, plus the shape of the wheelarches at the rear, from recent spy shots.

Power will come from the 3.7-litre V6 found in Nissan luxury arm Infiniti’s G37. This engine will build on the 350Z’s 309bhp, and enhance the Z-car’s reputation for driving fun – both from behind the wheel and the controls of a games console.

Plug-in Pininfarina set to tackle Smart

Here's a cool new city car set to create a buzz! It’s the electric-powered B0 – or B-Zero – and it’s the work of legendary Italian style house Pininfarina.

A rival to the Mercedes-built Smart,
it is powered by an electric engine, and uses hi-tech batteries along with a bank of fast-charging supercapacitors supplied by French company Ballore.

Unveiled at the Paris Motor Show, the four-door four-seater is tipped to start production as early as 2009, at Pininfarina’s HQ in Turin. As well as its good looks, it offers a range of never before seen technologies, including lithium-metal-polymer (LMP) batteries which can be recharged in less than four hours from a standard household plug. They also boast a range of more than 150 miles – more than lithium-ion cells. Battery life will also be boosted by solar roof panels and an automatic gearbox.

Top speed will to be limited to 80 mph, while the B0 also gets an innovative crash protection system with a cabin built to sit within the car, independent of the bodyshell. Prices should start at £4,000.

Citroen Picasso five-seater

Our exclusive spy picture below - the best yet of the compact MPV - shows how the entry-level version will get a unique rear end.

While its stablemate features a near-vertical tailgate to maximise headroom in the third row of seats, the smaller version has a stylish sloping rear windscreen instead. Unique tail-light clusters and a kinked window line also set it apart from the larger model. With minimal overhangs at the rear, the smaller C4 Picasso has a sportier profile, although it will share engines with the seven-seater. That includes the maker's 143bhp 2.0-litre petrol units, as well as 110bhp and 138bhp versions of the frugal 2.0-litre HDi diesel. Smaller powerplants may join the line-up in the future.

The big C4 Picasso goes on sale in January, but families wanting the handsome five-seater will have to wait a bit longer, as it won't be in showrooms until mid-2007. Prices are expected to start at around £14,500, which leaves room for the existing Picasso to continue alongside the new duo as a budget alternative.

Called BETandRACE, it offers gamers the choice of 15 tracks, which replicate famous European city streets. So you can learn the ropes in London, take a pitstop in Paris or burn rubber in Berlin.

There’s also a selection of cars to choose from, including the VW Golf GTI and Volvo C30 T5. And for those who don’t want to put their money on the line straight away, a free play mode allows users to battle for imaginary cash.

What’s your favourite car ad? Whether it’s Citroen’s robot or Honda’s skydivers, they all cost money to make.

To calculate just how much of a new car’s price goes directly on publicity, industry analyst Ebiquity used registration figures and ad budgets for 2008 so far. Renault tops the table with £389 spent per car sold. Yet Ford, the UK’s best-selling brand, spends £114 per car and BMW only £22. An Ebiquity spokesman said: “Such firms have already built a reputation, so don’t need to try as hard.”

Is scooter the Nex big thing?

More drivers are looking to cut commuting times and costs by switching to a scooter – and the new Gilera Nexus 300 is perfect for those with long trips to work.

Using a 300cc motor, it’s easily capable of keeping up with motorway traffic, yet can still slice through jams. It bridges the gap between the 125cc and 500cc models, and offers a good compromise between economy and performance – although the size of the engine means drivers switching from four wheels will need to pass their full bike test.

While the 300cc replaces the 250cc model, there is more to it than simply a bigger motor. The unit, shared with Vespa’s GTS300 Super, has similar power to the 250cc, but delivers 13 per cent more torque at lower revs. The chassis is identical to the Nexus 500’s, so should be more than capable of handling the extra urge. A 15-inch front wheel helps boost stability, while the original wide rear tyre remains.

Practicality isn’t ignored in the pursuit of performance, as there are 34 litres of underseat storage which Gilera claims will take a full-face helmet. A 33-litre top box is available as an option.

Electric MINI spied

It’s the spark we’ve been waiting for from BMW – the electric MINI is almost here! And our spies have managed to capture a fully working prototype out testing.

Due to make its debut at next month’s Los Angeles Motor Show, the MINI EV will be built in limited numbers by BMW and will first go on sale in the US, and then eventually to customers in large cities across Europe.

The MINI EV’s existence is the result of a new Californian law which requires all car manufacturers to offer at least one zero-emission vehicle. So expect the new MINI to be the first of many mainstream all-electric cars showing up on America’s west coast in the near future.

There is currently no release date scheduled but it is likely to reach American showrooms by the middle of next year.

Damp buster sees off winter’s worst

As winter closes in, so do the cold and damp – and even the best garages can’t protect your car completely. That’s where a dehumidifier such as this Prem-I-Air DD122FW-Mk2 comes into its own.

Instead of a traditional compressor, the newcomer has a wheel that contains porous granules which absorb up to seven litres of liquid every day. As the wheel has to be heated to release the water, it pumps out air at least 10 to 12 degrees Centigrade above the ambient temperature. This also means it is quieter and lighter than compressor-driven models.

There are variable fan speeds, and the operating temperature ranges from one to 40 deg C. The tank will hold up to two litres of liquid at a time and there is a continuous drainage facility, as well as a Nano Silver air filter that kills bacteria on contact.

The unit has a compact design and weighs 7kg, so it’s easily portable and can fit in narrow spaces in your garage.

Ford keys in speed curb

Boffins have developed the all-new ignition key, which contains a chip that can be pre-programmed to limit the driver’s pace – perfect for parents letting teenagers loose on their own set of wheels. The device can also give a seatbelt warning alert, and an early low-fuel warning. MyKey will come as standard on US versions of the Focus, plus Lincolns and Mercurys, from 2010.

Waterless wash ditches the dirt

Going to the hassle of setting up a jet washer, sponge, bucket and chamois to wash a car can be a drag, but thanks to wheel specialist Wolfrace you can get your car gleaming with only a bottle and a cloth.

When sprayed directly on to the body, the citrus-smelling Waterless Wash and Shine was easy to spread around and lifted dirt with ease. Although it didn’t give as good a result as a traditional wet wash and wax, the shine was acceptable and required only a light buff with a clean cloth to finish.

Water beading was present if not particularly defined, and the cleaner was suitable for virtually all surfaces. Overall it did what it said on the bottle, and is a match for similar waterless cleaners. But it can’t compete with a conventional wash and polish, especially on very grimy cars.

McLaren supercar

The Mac is back – and Auto Express has the spy shots to prove it! These amazing exclusive images show that McLaren engineers have hit the streets at last in the much-anticipated successor to the legendary F1 road car.

Due to go on sale in 2010, the exciting new machine was caught undergoing testing not far from the Formula One team’s base in Woking, Surrey by an eagle-eyed Auto Express reader.

Although the prototype is wearing some heavly disguise, it's clear to see that it's every inch the compact machine McLaren has been promising. Conceived as a smaller and less expensive model than the original F1, it’s gunning for the likes of Ferrari’s F430 and the Lamborghini Gallardo.

Codenamed P11, it has been designed and built completely in-house by a small group of engineers at the Formula One team’s factory. Firm details on the newcomer are scarce, but it is likely to carry a price tag of between £150,000 and £200,000 and use a 6.2-litre V8 sourced from F1 engine supplier Mercedes-Benz.

With the help of a turbocharger, the AMG unit will produce around 500bhp, and together with the latest carbon composites for the body and the chassis keeping weight down to around 1,100kg, the new McLaren should do 0-60mph in around four seconds and post a top speed of 200mph.

Formula One technology such as a semi-automatic paddleshift gearbox as well as carbon brakes are also likely to form part of the specification list too. Sales will start in around two years' time.

The MPG boosters

It wasn’t long ago that tuning engines was seen as a black art: the preserve of boy racers. Today it’s a different story. Chipping your motor is no longer simply about boosting power. Some kits claim they can significantly improve fuel economy, too!

And Auto Express has put these eco-chips to the test, by fitting one in our long-term Ford S-MAX 2.0 TDCi. The results were impressive to say the least!

We devised a 68-mile round trip, covering both urban and motorway driving, and travelled it before and after the engine tweaks. We recorded a 14 per cent mpg improvement – enough to slash our annual fuel bill by £184, if we covered 12,000 miles a year.

The work was done by Diesel Power Tuning (DPT), which offers a ‘plug and play’ solution that doesn’t alter your car’s ECU or remap the engine. With such a ‘non-invasive’ technique, you plug a black box, programmed specifically for your model, into an underbonnet sensor and it starts working straight away.
It was this simplicity, plus the fact DPT offers a chip designed for economy, that led us to choose it ahead of all the others. It told us to expect mpg improvements of 10-16 per cent. We were intrigued.

We set off from south London to Slough, Berks. Our destination was Paramount Performance, an official DPT dealer which had agreed to fit the box to our S-MAX and talk us through the process. But, of course, the journey wasn’t just about reaching Slough on time; we were setting a benchmark mpg figure – one with which we could compare our return trip economy and so judge the effectiveness of DPT’s product. After driving as economically as possible we reached Paramount Performance. The trip computer was reading 45.8mpg, bettering even Ford’s official combined economy figure of 45.6mpg.

Managing director Paul Busby immediately led us downstairs to show off his pride and joy… one of the most advanced rolling roads money can buy. The £85,000 kit was shipped over from Australia earlier this year.

It presented too good an opportunity to miss, so we decided to test the car’s power output before and after fitting the box. Although we weren’t looking to boost the bhp, increasing this is a side effect of economy chipping, as Busby told us: “With an engine such as this, we usually see a 6-10bhp improvement. If you go for the performance chip, however, that can be as much as 25bhp.”

Once the S-MAX had been backed into the garage and on to the rolling road, it was tied down securely. “These straps can take up to five tonnes, so we should be safe,” said Gerald Morten, technical manager at Paramount. After three runs in third gear and two runs in fourth, the computer read-out informed us our S-MAX was producing a maximum of 151.8bhp.

That’s 15.8bhp more than the Ford’s official figure of 136bhp. This can be put down to the natural variation from engine to engine – and we must have had a particularly good one! Then it was time for the installation.

If you thought this was the point when laptops and heavy-duty diagnostic kit would be strapped all over the car, you’d be wrong. The procedure is very simple – so much so that you could even do it yourself at home. “Each DPT box comes with photo instructions, so you could do a DIY job in about 10 minutes,” confirmed Martin Dowd, managing director of Ranstad, DPT’s supplier.

The unit consists of a black box attached to a cable with double connectors on one end. Remove a plug attached to a sensor on the common rail (the part of the engine that regulates pressure in the fuel injectors), connect up the new cable and stow the black box safely under the bonnet. Ensure the wires are not touching any hot or moving components, and you’re done! In no time our technician and diesel specialist Sean McGowan had finished. But before we set off for home to put our economy chip to the test, we fired up the rolling road once more – to see if it had affected our engine’s power output. And, just as Paul Busby had predicted, it had. Our car had now reached a maximum of 160.6bhp – an 8.8bhp increase.

“With the economy chip, the power hike is simply a side effect of improving the engine’s efficiency,” explained Dowd. “Maximum torque moves lower down the rev range, so the car is easier to drive smoothly at lower rpm – which in turn improves fuel returns.”

And he wasn’t wrong. On the trip home, changes in the motor’s torque characteristics were immediately apparent. Put simply, it made the car easier to drive in an economical way, letting us confidently cruise at 30mph in fourth gear. On arriving home, the average economy icon on the dash read 52.3mpg – a 6.5mpg improvement over the journey earlier in the day, on the same roads, with virtually identical traffic conditions.

So how can you squeeze this extra mileage from a motor that’s already noted for its efficiency? And if these engine settings are better, why didn’t the maker produce them this way in the first place? Dowd unravelled the mystery: “Production cars are designed to work anywhere in the world. Huge built-in tolerances allow for poor maintenance, low-grade fuel and ambient temperatures of -40oC to 50oC. In Turkey, for instance, the diesel is watered down by 10 per cent. But in the UK we have high-quality fuel, and temperatures that never get close to these extremes. So all we’re doing is tightening up the tolerances, shifting the torque characteristics and improving efficiency.”

We’ve proved DPT’s product works, but are there any other advantages over rival engine upgrades? Well, the simplicity of installation means the box can be transferred from one car to another – as long as they have the same engine. It’s also tamper-proof, so a fleet driver can’t switch it from economy to performance mode when his boss isn’t looking! And if you need to remove it, simply unplug the box and the vehicle returns to its factory settings.

Whether the unit is delivered to your door for you to fit yourself, or installed by a DPT dealer, the price is £350. Alternatively, if you already have the box but want to transfer it to a different type of engine or car, re-programming is around £100.

However, there are always two sides to a coin – and economy chips do have their drawbacks. “The biggest reservation motorists have about this technology is assuming that it will invalidate their car’s warranty,” Dowd admitted. “But in reality, having a ‘plug and play’ chip such as this doesn’t actually void anything. “If there is a problem with the engine, the maker is obliged to investigate exactly what the cause is – rather than simply assuming the DPT box is to blame. If our modification is the cause, the manufacturer’s warranty won’t cover it, but we have product liability insurance in place up to the value of £2,000,000.”

Another stumbling block is insuring a modified car. Often companies will void policies if they know the engine has been tinkered with – and only specialist outfits such as Adrian Flux will agree to offer you cover. However, DPT has struck deals with several mainstream insurers including Norwich Union and Zurich, and usually if it’s an economy chip rather than a performance one that’s fitted, it won’t affect your premium.

The popularity of these economy chips is growing as the price of fuel increases. A handful of franchised Mercedes dealers in Holland are now offering DPT as an optional extra, and Dowd expects a similar pattern to emerge in the UK – once the product becomes more established.

DPT has also struck a deal with Titan Travel, a firm specialising in trips to sporting events such as the Le Mans 24 Hours. All 160 of its VW minibuses have been kitted out – and drivers have reported an eight per cent reduction in emissions.

If you’re considering purchasing one of these chips, don’t think that it gives you licence to drive like a lunatic and still see a return at the pumps. You need to adapt your style behind the wheel, too. But these modifications can make a difference – and with running costs going through the roof, every little helps.

Compact’ X1’s big shock

BMW unveiled the X1 at Paris, but don’t let the name fool you... this is no mini-SUV! At a mere 108mm shorter than the X3, the concept’s sheer bulk shocked onlookers.

The model has a four-wheel-drive transmission that is used on the 3-Series in overseas markets, and the X1 is hailed as a ‘crossover’ by the firm.

It’s hoping to sell it to those wanting a beefed-up estate car, rather than a small 4x4. According to BMW insiders, this X1 is the completed showroom version in all but the most minor details, although production is still six months away. All versions will come with xDrive four-wheel drive, and the 3-Series underpinnings mean a variety of four and six-cylinder engines can be slotted beneath the bonnet.

The range will start with xDrive 18i and 18d versions, which use 2.0-litre petrol and diesel units. Uprated xDrive 20i and 20d-badged cars will also appear at launch.

Six-cylinder petrol and diesel units – generating 272bhp and 245bhp respectively – will top the range until a rumoured ‘tii’ flagship appears. BMW hasn’t ruled out a hybrid electric model in the future, too. Prices start at around £25,000, rising to £35,000 for an xDrive 30i.

Hi-tech phone set is a sound choice

Listening to music on your phone and taking hands-free calls can be a tricky business in the car, involving various leads and wires. But Bluetrek says you can do it all with its new Duo Stereo.

The hook design ensured the headset was comfortable. And while some testers found the separate earphones a bit awkward, they cancelled out background noise well.

This was particularly useful when listening to music, and they produced a clear sound, along with punchy bass. The quality of phone conversations was impressive, too, with good noise cancellation and clear audio.

However, the single-function button was hard to use, and it had to be depressed for a while for some actions. The volume control did synchronise with our mobile’s, though. Overall a great bit of kit, held back only by minor failings.

Speak easy

TALKING to your car and giving it instructions might seem like a wild idea from a sci-fi film – but voice recognition technology is already here and slowly creeping into vehicles.

And there’s no need to be daunted by it, as most of us will already use it. Far from being inspired by movies, automated speech commands have been around for a long time. Whenever you call your bank, mobile provider or train company to be given a list of options, it’s probably the same technology that’s now used in cars. It all started in the domestic sector, and was developed thanks to computer dictation software.

Such programs provided the groundwork for the latest systems, and what worked for them is now being incorporated into vehicles – both with integrated or portable devices. For motorists, these voice recognition and text to speech capabilities will enable them to concentrate on driving rather than on using secondary controls, so they’re claimed to be more convenient and safer.

To find out if that’s really the case, we consulted experts and tried the latest developments from market leader Nuance. They revealed the hardware is simple – a small but powerful PC, speakers and microphones – yet the development costs are huge. This is particularly the case with built-in systems that have to work straight out of the box – and be competitive when the car reaches the marketplace, years after the concept was devised. Basic controls for stereo or climate functions are prompted by a question requiring a defined answer – often a simple yes or no. The device recognises only such programmed responses, and ignores others. However, with more complicated instructions – such as those for selecting a radio station – speech patterns and the individual sounds of the commands are analysed before being matched with possible options on a database.

Navigation instructions are an important consideration, and that’s where voice recognition becomes more difficult. With around 20,000 street names in English alone, the parameters are much wider. Contrary to popular belief, though, the more complicated the address, the easier it is for the device to process. And while accents vary widely, scientists have worked out a method by which the gadget ‘learns’ how its user pronounces things from the moment it’s switched on.
By building a profile, the kit stores the details on its memory, ready for the next time that person instructs the device, normally resulting in a 20 per cent improvement on the default mode. So although at first it might offer unexpected variations on particular words, it becomes increasingly accurate with repeated use.

The next step is what the experts are calling an “open-ended system” – one in which the speech becomes more natural. Rather than the dialogue being limited to what the device can understand, the human will use whatever words they like, resulting in commands such as: “I fancy a Chinese meal – any ideas where I can get one?” At present, such a question would cause confusion. But thanks to constantly learning profiles and improving technology, the kit will ‘reply’ with a list of nearby restaurants, probably with links to their web pages – and direct you to whichever you choose!

As drivers won’t have to take their eyes off the road or their hands off the wheel, the result will be more convenient and safer use of such devices. Being able to search for local data simply by asking the vehicle will eventually lead to voice commands as the standard way to control in-car kit.

It’s set for introduction on top-end models being designed right now – which means in only a few years’ time it’ll be less ‘back to the future’ and more ‘back to reality’ for voice recognition vehicles!

Audi’s new baby steals the show

The next chapter in Audi’s small car future has just been written. This sensational model is the new A1 Sportback – and it’s a five-door version of the German manufacturer’s forthcoming compact hatch.

The A1 was first unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show earlier this year in the form of the three-door Metroproject Quattro. The wraps came off this more practical model at the Paris exhibition.

Together, the two concepts preview Audi’s forthcoming MINI rival, due on sale in the UK in 2010. And one thing is for sure: if this latest show car is anything to go by, customers are in for something special.

Taking the look of the Metroproject Quattro to new heights, the Sportback adds an extra pair of doors and a host of neat visual details. At the front is a set of adaptive LED headlights, which change their beam width and length according to how quickly the car is travelling.

The rear end features a split tailgate which has a drop-down glass panel and a vertically split screen, too. And the body itself is made from lightweight steel and carbon fibre composites. Under the bonnet is the most powerful incarnation yet of Audi’s 1.4-litre turbocharged TFSI unit, boasting 148bhp.

This is assisted by a 20kW electric motor which provides an extra 150Nm of torque. The hybrid set-up powers the front wheels only – unlike the all-wheel-drive A1 three-door – through a seven-speed S tronic double-clutch box.

Eco-friendliness is the buzz-word for the Sportback, as it also features a stop-start function and regenerative braking. In addition, it boasts Audi’s adjustable Drive Select system, which incorporates a special ‘efficiency’ mode.

Meanwhile, the satellite navigation even has a setting that can plot the most fuel efficient route to a destination, taking into account inclines and traffic density.

As a result of all these features, the A1 Sportback is remarkably economical, returning a hugely impressive 72.4mpg combined. The car is extremely clean, too, emitting a mere 92g/km of CO2. And it should be a lot of fun to drive thanks to the inclusion of Audi’s Magnetic Ride system, which was seen for the first time on the R8.

The hi-tech equipment continues inside. While the three-door concept featured a plug-in iPhone-style set-up which started the car and allowed a range of settings to be adjusted, the Sportback accepts a variety of mobiles.

Owners simply download some software from Audi, which allows their phone to ‘talk’ to the car. It can then be used to start the engine and remotely change temperature, warming up the interior on cold days.

When the A1 officially arrives in 2010, buyers can expect a wide range of engines – including the latest small-capacity turbo petrols and super-clean diesels.

An Audi spokesman told Auto Express that a hybrid version “would be available at some point down the line”. Prices should start from around £15,000.

Out with the bold for Mégane 3-dr

Sporting its new slimline rear end, the Mgane took centre stage at the Paris show last week. And all eyes were on the homegrown sporty Coup, as it made its public debut alongside the five-door hatch.

Although they share the same width, the three-door sits 12mm lower and has more aggressive front end styling. The cabin is more spacious than the existing three-door’s, with additional rear headroom.

The biggest change is that the bold ‘derrire’ has been ditched for a more curvaceous look, with a shallow rear screen and high shoulder line – a move that design chief Anthony Grade hopes will boost the Mgane Coup’s popularity. “The old look was polarising. That’s something you can’t afford to do,” he said.

Diesel and petrol engines, including biofuel-friendly units, will be offered from launch, joined in spring by Renault’s new 1.4-litre TCe 130 petrol engine. The hatch goes on sale next month priced from £13,995. The Coup arrives in UK showrooms in January.

Top Arnage gets last hurrah

Silk handkerchiefs at the ready, it’s going to be a tearful goodbye! This is the last-in-the-line Arnage, a model that stretches back 10 years and was the ultimate in opulent design and crushing performance. Appropriately named the Arnage Final Series, the car’s Paris appearance was a chance to bid farewell tothe much loved saloon.

To mark the end of an era, the Final Series will be limited to 150 models. It features the Arnage T’s 500bhp 6.3-litre V8 and uses design influences from the Brooklands Coup. These include a larger front air intake, stainless steel kickplates and aluminium filler cap.

However, Bentley isn’t feeling sentimental when it comes to the price... each example will cost £195,000.

TYRE pressure gauges should be included with every new car, motoring campaigners claim.

Having the device on board would make it easier for drivers to keep a regular eye on their rubber, according to Rob Beddis, from campaign group TyreSafe. He said: “We’re not talking about something fancy – just a cheap one that could live in the boot with the locking wheelnut key and jack,” he explained.

Beddis claims this would also enable motorists to check their tyres when cold – the best time to get an accurate reading. He was speaking at the launch of Tyre Safety Month, which runs throughout October. One driver in two admits having failed to check their tyres in the past month. Defective rubber caused 43 road deaths during 2007.

Quality counts when buying a multitool. And maker Gerber seems able to give its products a premium feel at a fraction of the price of high-end rivals.

Its latest offering is the Evo, which is just as impressive as its Suspension stablemate, which won our Issue 983 test.

As soon as you hold the Gerber, it feels like a top-of-the-range product. The Evo has a reassuring weight as you slip it from the tough nylon belt pouch. Then there are the neat touches we expect from Gerber. The tools open from the outside, so the handles only need to be flipped round when using the pliers – and this means they can have rounded edges, allowing users to apply force comfortably.

On the Evo, the pliers are sprung, too, for easy operation. We also like the way the main blades open one-handed. All tools lock in place, and can be released via a small slider or by opening another blade or bit.

You get serrated and fine-edged knives, a saw, bottle and can openers, scissors plus two flat drivers and one cross-head. Knives and scissors are sharp, while the pliers cut auto wire easily. And although the cross-head slipped on larger fasteners, it was fine on smaller ones.

it’s only 13mm thick, but the latest visor-mounted phone hands-free kit from Parrot isn’t thin on features.

Everything from voice recognition and voice synthesis to phonebook synchronisation is included, while it offers more than 400 hours of standby time. So the Minikit Slim punches above its measly 83g weight.

The flat panel incorporates NXT speaker technology, and provides surprising volume.

We found the microphone’s noise-cancelling technology effective, too. Voice recognition was great, as was the voice synthesisation. And while it struggled with a couple of our phonebook entries, dialling numbers was easy.

Controls were intuitive and the mount was flexible enough to securely attach to the visors in all our test vehicles. The only gripe we had is that we couldn’t charge it while in use because the 12V lead didn’t stretch far enough in our cabin. With such great battery capacity, though, this shouldn’t be a problem.

Citroen steals the show at Paris

Citroen is stealing all the headlines in Paris, announcing the return of the 2CV, pulling the covers off a new supercar and revealing its new C3 Picasso in the metal.

Top of the bill was news that the C-Cactus concept car, which is expected to make it into showrooms as the spiritual successor to the French firm’s legendary 2CV. Carrying over the less-is-more philosophy of the maker’s most recognisable model, the production ready C-Cactus will be affordable, basic and fun.

Along with the announcement, Citroen revealed an all-electric concept version of the C-Cactus. Bosses are tipping this green version to be offered alongside a 1.0-litre three-cylinder petrol model and a petrol/electric hybrid model.

While the C-Cactus is set to become a top-value Citroen, the other new model on its stand is designed to thrill! The GT is a supercar with a difference. Its name is borrowed from Sony’s Gran Turismo video game on the PlayStation 3, and players will soon be able to download the hot Citroen and race it in GT5: Prologue. However, the bad news is that the two-seater is unlikely to make the leap from cyberspace into the real world.

A concept car that’s closer to the showroom is the Hypnos crossover SUV. While a production version of the striking model hasn’t been ruled out, elements of its styling are set to appear on future Citroen models.

The new C3 Picasso went on display in Paris alongside concept versions showing styling alternatives and debuting Citroen’s second-generation Stop-Start system. This technology will be available in the new supermini-MPV when it goes on sale next summer.

People carrier fans have got plenty more to look forward to from the French firm. Designers have added another row of chairs to the Berlingo Multispace, but the seven-seater will add less than £1,000 to the list price of the standard version. Buyers after the ultimate in bargain basement family transport can wait for the Nemo Combi. Expected to be available for around £10,000, the five-seater will go on sale in the UK in the new year.

These two new gadgets from iPod accessories giant Gear4 use the Follow Me technology to ensure the transmitter and your stereo are singing from the same frequency – by adjusting both to a new, clearer frequency in unison.

The AirZone FM Follow Me is an iPod dongle that plugs directly into the bottom of your player, while the CarDock FM Follow Me connects to your 12V power outlet and charges your device as you use it. Both include ClearSearchT – a feature which allows the user to store the five clearest frequencies in the area and scroll through them with ease.

In addition, RDS technology means album information can be displayed on the car radio display. The AirZone works
with any iPod, while the CarDock has been specifically designed to function with the Apple iPhone as well.

Watch out Mondeo – SEAT is taking on the traditional family car class for the first time with the Exeo.

It's based on the previous-generation Audi A4, but the Exeo gets styling tweaks inspired by the latest Ibiza. The new saloon was revealed at the Paris Motor Show and goes on sale early next year with a starting price of around £16,000.

Three petrol and three diesel engines will be available, and SEAT expects to sell up to 4,000 models. It has the same cabin as the outgoing Audi A4 Cabriolet – which boasted a higher quality finish than the regular saloon version. As well as some handy association with the Audi brand, the firm is hoping the Exeo will appeal to buyers looking for a premium feel without the hefty price tag.

SEAT also took the wraps off two Ibiza variants – the Cupra and the ECOmotive. The former gets a 178bhp 1.4-litre supercharged and turbocharged engine, which is mated to a seven-speed DSG twin-clutch gearbox complete with steering wheel-mounted paddleshifters. It hits 0-60mph in 7.5 seconds and 140mph, but it’s also clean and green, too, returning 42mpg and emitting 159g/km of CO2. Helping it put its power down is a new traction control system and uprated suspension.

Meanwhile, the ECOmotive sits at the other end of the range. With a 79bhp 1.4-litre TDI diesel and tweaks to the aerodynamics, gearing and engine management, it returns 76.3mpg and emits a tax-friendly 98g/km of CO2.

Lamborghini has taken the wraps off the Estoque saloon at the Paris Motor Show - unveiling details of one of the most exciting four door saloons ever!

The Estoque is based on an all-new aluminium composite platform (not the chassis from parent firm Audi's A8, as rumoured) and is powered by the 5.0-litre V10 from the Gallardo LP560-4. However, this has been revised to offer more torque, 560Nm instead of 540Nm, and less power, down from 552bhp to around 500bhp.

Power will get to the road via four-wheel drive linked to a seven-speed double clutch sequential gearbox, which is likely to feature wheel-mounted paddleshifters for manual changes. Weight distribution for the front-engined saloon is 55:45 front to rear, and Lambo predicts a top speed comfortably in excess of 200mph!

The interior is inspired by the limited edition Reventon, with an aircraft-style instument display. But despite the supercar ambience, Lamborghini is confident the four-seater will be capable of transporting four adults in absolute comfort.

Lamborghini stopped short of giving the Estoque a green light for production at the unveiling, although if it does get the go-ahead, the roadgoing version is some four years away. Few would bet against the Estoque hitting showrooms, however, particularly with Posrche and Aston Martin set to produce sales-boosting saloons of their own.

The new MINI has been caught with its top off! This is the all-new Convertible, snapped on test by our spies.

It’s the first time the production-ready drop-top has been seen undisguised.

Insiders at MINI have exclusively revealed to Auto Express that the cabrio will make its debut at the Detroit Motor Show in January, with production starting shortly afterwards to ensure sales are in full swing for summer 2009. According to sources close to the firm, the Convertible features a ‘multi-functional’ folding cloth top, which can be opened like a sunroof, as well as fully stowed.

Based on these snaps, the hood seems to follow the blueprint set by the current model: a ‘pram roof’ set-up that sits on the rear shelf. But the new top appears to take up less space when open.

The roll bars of the current model have gone, too. They are replaced by a single pop-up unit that engages when required, but is otherwise hidden behind the rear seat backrests. Other features carried over include the bottom-hinged bootlid and the optional transparent wind deflector between the front and rear seats.

Second-generation MINI Convertibles have been spotted testing since as far back as 2006, although it is understood that bosses have delayed production of the new model due to the success of the MkI, which continues to sell well.

The car in these pictures is a Cooper version, although the Convertible will be offered in every model guise as before – including, for more frugally minded sunshine seekers, the Cooper D.

The Insignia is yet to appear in Vauxhall’s UK showrooms, but the firm has already pulled the covers off the ultra-frugal ecoFLEX variant.

Revealed on the firm’s Paris Motor Show stand, the green version of the Ford Mondeo rival promises to cut your running costs and carbon emissions without compromising on refinement – in fact it’s the quietest Vauxhall ever built!

Powered by a 158bhp 2.0-litre turbodiesel engine, the ecoFLEX family car produces less than 140g/km of CO2. Despite emissions on a par with many superminis, it will still be capable of 0-62mph in 9.5 seconds thanks to a torque overboost function which increases pulling power from 350Nm to 380Nm for up to 15 seconds.

The key to the Vauxhall’s efficiency lies partly in its slippery shape. The standard Insignia’s drag coefficient has been reduced from 0.27Cd to 0.26Cd, while special eco tyres are fitted to 17-inch alloy wheels.

Prices are yet to be announced for the newcomer, which will go on sale in the UK next summer, but it won’t sit at the bottom of the Insignia range. Instead it will be marketed as a mid-range variant with comfort and economy coming as standard.

Meanwhile the Insignia Sports Tourer estate also made its world debut in Paris. The newcomer has a 540-litre luggage capacity with the rear seats in place, while the firm's new FlexRide adjustable dampers are set up to adjust for heavy loads. The Sports Tourer will go on sale in the UK in March next year.

EVEN if electric cars do emit more CO2 than their petrol equivalents, manufacturers aren’t being deterred from pushing the technology further!

Chrysler has revealed a trio of battery-powered models – but only one of the Chrysler EV, Jeep EV and Dodge EV will go into production, from 2010. And bosses won’t say which.

The Dodge is a rear-wheel-drive sports car based on the Lotus Europa. It features a 268bhp electric motor mated to a lithium-ion battery pack, covers 0-60mph in less than five seconds and has a 120mph
top speed. The Jeep and Chrysler EVs are based on the Wrangler and Grand Voyager respectively, and mate an electric motor to a small petrol engine.

Compared to the glitz and glamour of some Paris Motor Show stands, Skoda’s was relatively understated - surprising given the facelifted Octavia was handed its debut.

Unveiled in hatch and estate form, the car has fresh headlights and a new bumper that bring the family car's nose into line with the rest of Skoda's range.

Under the bonnet, new 1.4-litre and 1.8-litre TSI engines follow the downsizing trend aimed at making cars greener yet more powerful. The turbo and supercharged engines should provide plenty of power for the facelifted Octavia and are mated to seven-speed DSG twin-clutch gearboxes.

Also making an appearance was a new range-topping version of the flagship Superb 4x4. With a 3.6-litre FSI V6 boasting 260bhp and permanent four-wheel-drive, the 4x4 is the most powerful production Skoda so far.

And as a nod to the much loved (but now departed) Fabia vRS, the firm brought along a black Fabia 1.9 TDI Sport Line with a white roof and green brake calipers.

Just one day before its Paris Motor Show debut, BMW has taken the wraps off the X1.

The small 4x4 is officially a concept car at the moment, but the X1 unveiled in Paris will hit showrooms in Autumn 2009 virtually unchanged.

The X1 SAV (Sports Activity Vehicle) shares its underpinnings with another diminutive 4x4 on the horizon – the MINI Crossman. The chassis is actually a reworked version of the current BMW 3-Series’s, which means the X1 will be able to accommodate a wide range of petrol and diesel engines.

All X1s will come with BMW's xDrive four-wheel drive system, and petrol power will start with a 170bhp 2.0-litre unit called the xDrive20i, topping out with a six-cylinder xDrive30i developing 272bhp.

The diminutive 4x4 crossover will also get diesel power, most likely starting with the 2.0-litre, 143bhp engine found in the 118d and including BMW’s planet-saving efficient dynamics programme. xDrive20d and xDrive 23d variants will also appear.

Prices will start at around £20,000 for the 2.0-litre version, rising up to £30,000 for a range-topping xDrive30i. A hot X1 tii is rumoured to be in the pipeline, too.

Despite being the smallest 4x4 in BMW’s stable, the X1 isn’t dramatically smaller than the X3 – it’s only 108mm shorter than its big brother!

However, the X1 is billed as a crossover vehicle capable of carrying four in comfort, so BMW designers have created a look aimed at making the car appear smaller.

The German maker expects sales in excess of 100,000 per year, which is not unrealistic given that the X1 will have no direct rivals – Audi’s Q3 is at least two years away, and the MINI Crossman will be pitched at a different target market by BMW chiefs.

The Gullwing has taken flight! This is the Mercedes supercar that’s set to perch right at the top of the tree when it hits showrooms in 2010.

Our spies have captured a pre-production prototype of the Gullwing out testing in heavy disguise (below). However, its unique, cartoon-like proportions instantly gave its identity away! A long, exaggerated bonnet and set-back cabin make it obvious that this is the successor to the Mercedes SLR McLaren.

That model was widely criticised for being too expensive and dynamically bland, despite its astonishing performance. But Mercedes is determined this model won’t follow the same path. As a result, the German maker has turned to in-house tuning arm AMG to develop its latest supercar. It will ensure that the flagship will have sharp cornering ability to match its amazing looks. Sources suggest the newcomer, which is codenamed C197 internally, will have a unique name aimed to distinguish it as a flagship model, separating it from the SL range. The ‘SLC’ badge has been mooted for some time, although insiders suggest it may be too similar.

Whatever the outcome, production will last for only two years and be limited to around 6,000 cars per year to ensure exclusivity and prestige.

Power will come from either a turbocharged V8 or naturally aspirated V10 generating between 550bhp and 650bhp. This will be sent to the rear wheels via a revised version of the firm’s 7G-Tronic automatic gearbox.

THE AA might be better known for fixing breakdowns, but now it has decided to use its expertise to keep your car looking its best as well. The six-piece Essentials Valeting range features wash and wax, trim, tyre, upholstery and wheel cleaners, plus glass polish.

We found the wash and wax removed dirt with no problems, and produced a good shine and some water beading. However, it was no substitute for a proper polish – which the line-up does not have. The wheel cleaner did a great job and took off baked-on brake dust with little effort.

For the tyres, we followed the instructions to remove excess product with a dry cloth. However, it was very easy to wipe off too much, and end up with a dull finish. The glass cleaner was easy to use and the result streak-free, while the trim product rejuvenated our cabin plastics, although it did leave some surfaces a little too shiny. Finally we applied the upholstery cleaner to some lightly soiled fabric and leather, and it had no trouble removing the stains.

This is a good all-round range as we’d expect, as it is produced for the AA by regular car care test winner Comma. It is also decent value: it’s only a shame there isn’t a dedicated wax.

The new MINI convertible has sprung a leak! These low-res images have appeared on MINI blog website MotoringFile - presumably leaked by an insider at MINI, because they appear to be brochure scans.

The open top MINI isn't due to make its debut until the Detroit Motor Show in January (leaving the Paris show limelight for the MINI Crossover Concept), but the car is evidently ready to hit showrooms now.

As you can see, the look is very similar to the outgoing first-generation car, which has lasted well into the second-generation because it continues to sell well. MINI will, of course, point out the raft of changes that have been made when the car is unveiled, but the winning formula of the current Convertible remains largely intact - most notably the 'pram roof' that stows on top of the rear bulkhead.

Major changes include a new pop-up roll bar in place of the fixed pair on the current car, and a new 'Always Open' display, which tells the driver how many miles they've done with the roof down.

These pictures show Cooper and Cooper S Convertibles, but the complete range of engines powering the fixed head will appear in the rag top, meaning MINI One and Cooper D versions will appear too.

As this teaser shot (above) shows, Mitsubishi is trying to keep us in the dark about one of its world debuts in Paris. But Auto Express can see beyond the smoke and mirrors!

The disguised car is the new Colt supermini – and the fresh front end brings it in line with the Lancer and Evo. It features the same grille, but has rounder bumpers and headlights to give a friendlier appearance.

With its copycat Evo looks, speculation is rife that Mitsubishi will produce a junior version of the rally-bred road car with more firepower than the current 147bhp Colt CZT. The 1.1, 1.3 and 1.5-litre petrol engines from the existing car will be carried over, though, joined by a 1.5-litre diesel promising CO2 emissions of less than 120g/km. UK buyers will get their hands on the updated Colt when it hits showrooms in the spring.

Ford has plunged to new lows with the Fiesta ECOnetic – the supermini uses less fuel and produces less CO2 than any car to wear the blue oval!

Set to appear at the Blue Oval’s Paris show stand, the newcomer boasts 76.3mph economy on the combined cycle, but stick to the motorways and the new supermini will be capable of 88.3mpg!

The 89bhp1.6-litre Duratorq TDCi engine, which is fitted with a diesel particulate filter, emits only 98g/km of CO2, putting it into vehicle excise duty band A – which means owners won’t have to pay a penny in annual road tax!

Capable of reaching 62mph from standstill in 12.3 seconds, Ford promises the ECOnetic Fiesta does not sacrifice ‘the driving quality, style or practicality of the core Fiesta range’, despite a comprehensive list of aerodynamic and mechanical changes.

An improved drag coefficient by way of lowered ride height, new wheel covers and wheel deflectors increase aerodynamic efficiency, as do low rolling resistance tyres. Specially developed low friction engine oils and low viscosity transmission fluid, as well as a taller final drive ratio for the five-speed gearbox, make up the major mechanical changes.

The greenest Ford yet is expected to hit showrooms early in 2009.

CARS today have so many different trim fasteners that a good screwdriver set is essential. And this new Kamasa Multi-Bit kit caters for 11 of the most common types.

Ten bits are kept inside the handle, with the last in the drive itself. The internal storage works well with a damped feel to the action, although it is slow to open fully. Unfortunately, at the other end the pen-style cap hides a cheap-looking fake chrome collar.

Three Phillips, three flat blades and five star drives are included, but we’d have liked to have seen more variety in size, as they all tended to be on the small side. The screwdriver ratchet didn’t slip while on test, although the handle could have been more effective. It’s a great piece of glovebox kit: just make sure the supplied bits will fit your vehicle!

The A4 isn’t the only Audi range that’s set to expand – as these grainy spy shots prove. This is the A5 Cabriolet, which will signal the end for the current A4 drop-top when it makes its world debut on the stands at the Paris Motor Show next month.

Our spies caught the cabrio on Switzerland’s mountain roads, and snapped it with its cloth roof down for the first time. Engines will be carried over from the A5 coup range, with petrol units ranging from a 168bhp 1.8 to a 3.2-litre V6, along with 2.7 and 3.0-litre TDI diesels. An S5 is expected to follow later.

These are the first pictures of Audi’s latest S-express: the all-new S4. And the company is bucking wthe trend of installing bigger engines with each new generation – as the car has lost a pair of cylinders!

Both the saloon and Avant estate will debut at the Paris Motor Show – alongside an as-yet-unnamed Audi concept – and they’re fitted with a V6 instead of the current V8.

However, a supercharger will compensate for the S4’s drop in capacity from 4.2 to 3.0 litres. This takes power in the all-new engine to 333bhp – only 6bhp short of the V8’s output.

Even more impressive is the fact that torque increases from 409Nm to 439Nm. As a result, the saloon covers 0-62mph in 5.1 seconds – half-a-second faster – and can hit 155mph.

By switching to the lighter TFSI engine, Audi is able to offer real benefits in economy, too. While the current S4 returns 21.1mpg, the newcomer has a far more creditable 29.1mpg figure – which is a dramatic improvement of 26 per cent.

Top brass say prices will remain close to the existing model’s £37,500 tag, and buyers will get a choice of a six-speed manual gearbox or an optional seven-speed twin-clutch S tronic transmission. The latter has a full automatic mode, or lets the driver change ratios manually via paddles behind the steering wheel.

In terms of styling, the S4 builds on the strong design of the latest A4. Subtle changes include unique side skirts and badging, as well as aluminium-effect wing mirrors. At the back, quad exhaust pipes hint at the extra muscle the newcomer delivers over the current range-topping A4 3.2 quattro. As with that model, the 4WD system sends 60 per cent of power to the back tyres. It works with a new active sport differential, which directs drive to the outer rear wheel in bends to give more grip and stronger acceleration.

The S4’s suspension is stiffer than the standard car’s, and it sits 20mm closer to the road for better handling. As standard, owners get 18-inch alloys, with 19-inch rims an optional extra.

Audi’s Drive Select system is fitted, too. This gives a choice of comfort, auto or dynamic modes, and alters the throttle response, the steering weight and the S tronic box’s shift points to suit the driver’s tastes.

Further adjustment is offered by adaptive shock absorbers – although this isn’t the clever magnetic system found on the R8. Instead, simpler hydraulic valves switch to a sportier set-up, as they do on the new VW Scirocco. All these settings can be monitored via the optional MMI cabin control system.

You wait ages for a new Citroen, then two come along at once. As the French marque reveals its facelifted C4 hatch, the forthcoming C3 remains well under cover.

The new C4 gets a revised grille and resculpted bonnet, plus new colours and interior trims. Citroen says the fit and finish are improved inside, as is the layout. The rev counter has been moved from the steering wheel into the central display.

There are two new petrol engines, both co-developed with BMW: a 118bhp VTi and a 148bhp THP turbo, offering better economy and emissions.

Meanwhile, our spies have spotted the new C3 hatch on test ahead of its launch next year. Set to replace both the current C3 and C2 supermini, the five-door will retain the 2CV-inspired curves but adds chunky detailing. An off-road X-TR variant will follow later, as will a Pluriel cabriolet. Power comes from the current petrol and diesel range, with outputs of between 60bhp and 110bhp.

Fiat's cute 500 has turned over to the dark side! This is the 500 Abarth 'esseesse', and it's the meanest iteration of the 500 ever!

The esseesse (pronounced "essay essay") certainly looks the part with its lowered ride, 17-inch alloys and dual exhaust pipes integrated into the rear splitter.

In this case appearances are definitely not deceptive! The stats speak for themselves: the 500 Abarth’s 1.4-litre T-Jet turbo engine is fettled to develop 158bhp and 230Nm of torque, allowing the esseesse to hit 62mph from standstill in 7.4 seconds and top out at 131mph. Yet the small capacity engine is economical too, returning 43mpg combined and emitting 155g/km of CO2.

Set to hit UK showrooms in January, the esseesse Abarth is essentially an upgrade kit for the standard Abarth 500, and can only be fitted by an approved network of specialists. The kit dispenses with the Abarth's wheels, replacing them with the 17-inch esseesse rims you see here, then the suspension is lowered and the brakes upgraded for improved stopping power. Under the bonnet, a high-performance air filter is the only hardware change.

The transformation is completed by way of 'esseesse' badges for the front and rear of the car, and owners will get a bespoke key cover as a constant reminder of their 500's ultimate status.

There's no official word on pricing for the kit as yet, but expect the MINI Cooper S to provide a benchmark, suggesting a £16,000 price tag for an esseesse equipped 500 Abarth.

It’s a race car, but not as we know it... The new 908 HY (right) has a diesel-electric hybrid powertrain, and is Peugeot’s hope for glory at the 2009 Le Mans 24 Hours. It’s fitted with a 60kw electric motor and 10 lithium-ion battery packs, which are topped up through regenerative braking. The result? A 20-second power boost each lap which the driver can use to overtake or save fuel. Bosses are keen to stress the car’s technology will filter on to future road models.

Meet the Peugeot Prologue – but this is one car that needs little introduction!

It’s a prototype for the firm’s soon-to-be-released 3008 SUV, which we spied in January (Issue 996). And even in pre-production form, it looks ready to take on all-comers in the mini SUV-MPV crossover market.

The new model is designed to fill a gap below the 4007 SUV, but will face competition from the likes of the Citroen C4 Picasso and Nissan Qashqai. Using an electric hybrid powertrain, the Prologue offers the equivalent of 200bhp and emits only 109g/km of CO2. These figures are near identical to those of its PSA stablemate, the diesel-electric hybrid Citroen Hypnos, which we revealed in Issue 1,029.

Buyers will be able to take their pick from a lighter, more economical front-wheel-drive layout or four-wheel-drive traction, with the latter reserved for range-topping models. A practical seven-seat interior will also set the Prologue apart.

Its platform and engines are shared with the 308 hatchback, so expect the 1.6-litre petrol units PSA co-developed with BMW to be on offer. There will also be a range of economical HDi diesel powerplants.

Insiders at Peugeot have confirmed that the newcomer will make its debut at the Paris Motor Show – where it will be one of a trio of hybrid Lions to be revealed. The RC hybrid coup and 908 HY Le Mans racer (right) are also set to star in the French capital. And the futuristic cars demonstrate how determined Peugeot bosses are to reduce the firm’s environmental impact. The roadgoing Prologue is set to hit UK showrooms in 2010.

Both will be aiming to clinch the drivers’ crown when they take to the track at this weekend’s season finale at Brands Hatch, Kent.

On present form, it’s Vauxhall ace Giovanardi who is favourite to snatch the coveted prize. The Italian holds a 44-point advantage over arch-rival Plato, with a mere 45 points up for grabs. But Plato will want to go out on a high, following SEAT’s recent announcement that it will quit the series at the end of the season. There will also be a battle for the Independents’ Trophy, with Team RAC’s Colin Turkington holding a narrow 22-point lead over Mat Jackson of BMW Dealer Team UK.

GM planned to release these photos of the world’s first plug-in hybrid at its centenary next week, but an unknown source leaked them. The final model has an aerodynamic front end and a high boot lip spoiler, giving a chunky stance. The snaps also reveal other interesting features, such as the futuristic LED foglights.

The groundbreaking hybrid is on sale here in 2010, badged as a Vauxhall, and we will have more details when it debuts at next month’s Paris Motor Show.

This is VW’s most sumptuous family hatch ever, badged the Collectors Edition. It’s the work of design chief Walter de Silva, and gets a unique paintjob and high-grade leather cabin.

Moonlight Blue pearl-effect paint covers every inch of the body, including the front grille, while the 18-inch multi-spoke Vancouver alloys get a high-gloss finish. Inside, the soft, untreated hide trim has been chosen to reflect “the elegance of hand-crafted Italian shoes”, according to the firm. It covers the seats, centre armrest and door inserts, while de Silva’s initials are embossed on the outer side panels of the seats.

There are also high-gloss dash inserts and aluminium kickplates. But VW has yet to confirm whether the Collectors Edition will head the UK line-up when it hits dealers in January.
